How to Choose Bathroom Vanity Cabinets
Before you buy a bathroom vanity, carefully consider the bathroom vanity cabinets. Will they fit your bathroom supplies or will you have to change the way you use your bathroom because of the cabinet design? To get the most out of your bathroom vanity and cabinets, follow these steps to choosing the right vanity for your needs.
Assess Your Current Stuff
Take everything out of your bathroom cabinets and spread it out on the table or counter. You’ll probably find some things you forgot were there, or that expired a decade ago, so throw out what you don’t need or use. Now arrange your stuff into groups: bath products, medications, cleaning products, makeup, feminine products, styling products, etc.
With your bathroom contents grouped, you can start to get a sense for how you’d like it to be organized. If you buy shampoo in bulk in large bottles, you probably need a lot of space under the sink to store it. On the other hand, if your hair styling products, makeup, and other beauty products end up a jumbled mess, maybe you need more drawer space.
Using shoeboxes or other drawer-sized containers, try different arrangements and note which combination of drawers and cabinets works best. What will keep you organized and provide enough room to store everything you need? Run through the motions of a typical morning in the bathroom to decide should be near the front or top and what can go in the back.
Scout for Bathroom Vanity Cabinets
When you shop for vanities, it’s important to find a style, color, and countertop you like, but pay special attention to the cabinet configuration. You should be able to find a vanity that offers attractive facings and countertops as well as the type of storage you need. If you absolutely fall in love with a vanity that doesn’t suit your needs, you can always buy plastic storage, but if you’re going to the effort of remodeling the bathroom, you should do it right.
You may find that the vanities have slightly smaller or larger cabinets, or one or two drawers more or less than you’d like. Try rearranging your stuff to see if you could make that configuration work before you place your order. You’ll have this vanity for years, so don’t rush your decision.
Neatly Organize Your Belongings
Once your new bathroom vanity is installed, put your bath supplies away the same way you had them organized in the shoeboxes. You may have to make a few adjustments, but your plan should be pretty close. Move things as necessary during your first week with the new cabinets.
You may decide to buy additional under cabinet storage containers, but wait a few weeks to see how you really use the stuff under the sink. Now that you’ve tossed the stuff you don’t use, you might find your routine is different!
When shopping for a new bathroom vanity, the cabinets should be as important a consideration as the countertop, style, and finish. A baroque single cabinet vanity with marble countertop may be gorgeous, but you won’t enjoy it if you like to keep all your supplies in drawers.
