New Looks for Your Bedroom Vanity

Maybe you’ve had your bedroom vanity since you were a child or received it as a hand-me-down from a relative. You’re very lucky if your vanity has been well taken care of and is not in need of a facelift. For bedroom vanities that need some extra tender loving care, there is hope. Below are a few ideas on how to give your old vanity new life.

Because bedroom vanities are pieces of furniture as opposed to fixtures like your bathroom vanities, it is usually easier to refurbish them, but any of these techniques can work on your bathroom vanity as well.

• Create a Mosaic – Tap into your inner artist by using pieces of tile and colored glass to create a design on your vanity top. Fill in the space between the tiles with grout and lacquer the top to even out the height.

• Add Character with Stencils – Stencil vines, leaves or even letters of the alphabet if you vanity has a nice, but boring finish already. This is an especially good technique to give your vanity a shabby chic feel or to brighten up children’s bedroom furniture.

• Restore – You can restore the finish on a piece of antique furniture using cleaners designed for old furniture. Make sure to test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area before you douse your valuable vanity with it.

• Refinish - Refinish your vanity if you want to start from scratch. Although sanding is a good technique to remove an old finish, it can damage your furniture if done incorrectly. Paint strippers are a great bet, but contrary to what most cans say you will probably have to do some light sanding to get the best result on your bedroom vanity.

You can use any of these techniques by themselves or with each other to create a beautiful piece of furniture that reflects your personality. Let your child have input in the finished design if the vanity is for his or her room, but be careful not to expose young lungs to harsh chemicals when it comes to the creating the finished product.
