Types of Vanity Mirrors

Depending on the style you choose, vanity mirrors are suitable for the bedroom, the bathroom, or even to decorate a hallway. The mirrors come in three primary styles: wall-mounted, table, and make-up. Medicine cabinets are not considered vanity mirrors because they are set into the wall rather than on top of it.

Wall-Mounted Vanity Mirrors

Both bedroom and bathroom mirrors can be wall-mounted. Wall-mounted bathroom mirrors don’t offer additional storage, but they can enhance the look of the room. Options include unframed corner-to-corner mirrors and framed mirrors. Framed mirrors are available in both ornate and contemporary styles. Some wall mirrors also have built-in light strips or mounted light fixtures.

Bathroom mirrors are traditionally square or rectangular, but an oval mirror is an attractive accompaniment to a baroque vanity. Unusual round mirrors with contemporary borders can add a touch of sophistication to a modern bathroom.

In the bedroom, a wall-mounted mirror should be framed to set it off from the wall. It can be round, oval, or square, depending on the style of the vanity it accompanies. Avoid buying a mirror that seems out of scale for the vanity or it will overpower the room.

Table Mirrors

Table mirrors are designed for ornate vanity tables rather than bathrooms. They usually have metal frames with baroque detailing. They’re nearly always oval and smaller than wall-mounted mirrors. In addition to placing a table mirror on a vanity table, it can also be placed on a dresser or desk. Due to its small size, it can be temporarily moved to a different location where the light is better.

Make-Up Mirror

Make-up mirrors are usually small in size, no more than eight inches in diameter. They can either be wall-mounted with a moveable arm or stand on a small base. Most are sleek metal. Lighted makeup mirrors are usually one-sided, while non-lighted mirrors are usually two-sided. One side is a magnifying mirror while the other side reflects the unmagnified image. Tabletop make-up mirrors are small enough to place anywhere you have the best light.

Wall-mounted make-up mirrors are especially useful for deep vanities. They allow you a closer view to apply make-up or maintain your skin, but fold back out of the way to give you full access to the sink and countertop when you need it.

Whichever type of mirror you choose, buy it after you’ve chosen your vanity so the two are close in style and the size of the mirror suits the size of the vanity. Wall-mounted mirrors are fairly easy to install, so you don’t need to worry about having them installed on the same day as the vanity. Most can be mounted on sturdy wall hooks or wall clips designed to support mirrors or heavy pictures. Once installed, the mirror will complete the look of your bathroom or complement your bedroom vanity perfectly.
